My WordCamp Manila Adventure & The Visa Quest
As an expatriate living in Malaysia, the opportunity to attend WordCamp 2025 in Manila, Philippines, at the end of December 2024, sparked an exciting travel plan. My first step, naturally, was to consult the official Philippines Embassy website for their visa requirements. What followed was a journey that, while ultimately successful, came with its own set of twists and turns.
Essential Visa Requirements for Expats in Malaysia
Based on my experience, here’s a comprehensive list of documents you’ll likely need when applying for a Philippines visa from Malaysia:
- Visa Application Form: Duly filled out and signed.
- Police Clearance: This was a crucial, and initially unexpected, requirement for me. You can obtain this from the Malaysian Police Clearance authority. (While I can’t provide a live link here, ensure you search for the official Malaysian police clearance portal).
- Bank Statements: Typically, six months of bank statements are required to demonstrate financial capability.
- Passport Copy: A clear photocopy of your passport’s bio-data page.
- Previous Visa Copies: Copies of any previous visas you’ve held.
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Office: A letter from your employer stating no objection to your travel.
- Long-Term Visa Copy: A copy of your valid Malaysian long-term visa (e.g., Employment Pass, Dependent Pass).
- Travel Itinerary: A detailed plan of your proposed travel within the Philippines.
- Hotel Booking: Confirmation of your accommodation in the Philippines.
The Application Process: A Two-Step Dance
The Philippines visa application process at the Embassy in Malaysia typically involves two distinct phases:
Phase 1: Document Verification & Initial Submission
Your first visit to the Embassy is primarily for document verification. You need to present all your prepared documents to an embassy officer. They meticulously check every detail. In my case, this initial check revealed a missing piece: the Police Clearance. This was a requirement I hadn’t anticipated, and my file was returned with instructions to obtain it. After securing the police clearance from the Malaysian authorities, I revisited the Embassy. This time, my documents were accepted for processing, and I was advised to await an email notification. I waited approximately seven working days before receiving the good news: my visa application would proceed.

Phase 2: Fee Payment & Passport Submission
Once your application is approved for processing, you’ll be invited for a second visit to the Embassy. This is when you submit the visa fee and, crucially, your passport. The visa fees are straightforward:
- Normal Process: RM 156 (delivery within 3 working days)
- Express Process: An additional RM 65 (total RM 221), for visa delivery within 2 working days.
Given that my WordCamp Manila trip was fast approaching, I opted for the express service and successfully received my visa within two working days.
The Unexpected 7-Day Visa & On-Arrival Extension
However, upon collecting my passport, a wave of disappointment washed over me. Despite my plans for an extensive trip exploring Manila, El Nido, Cebu, and Oslob – an itinerary that would easily span a minimum of 15 days – the visa granted was for a mere 7 days. This was incredibly frustrating.
I immediately approached the visa officer to explain my predicament. Their response, while logical, was a tough pill to swallow: “You submitted a 7-day itinerary, so we gave you a 7-day visa.” It was a fair point, but my disappointment remained. Seeing my concern, they offered a glimmer of hope: “Don’t worry, proceed to Manila. Upon entry, explain your situation to the duty officer, and they will help you extend your stay.” This advice, though unconventional, was reassuring enough for me to proceed with my travel plans.
Following their guidance, upon my arrival at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Kuala Lumpur, I approached the immigration duty officer. After stamping my initial 7-day entry, they directed me to an adjacent office specifically for visa extensions. Within that office, I completed a simple form, provided my hotel booking details, and to my absolute relief, received a 30-day extension on my visa within just 30 minutes! Boom!
The Embassy of the Philippines in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
For those seeking their location, the Embassy of the Philippines in Kuala Lumpur is generally accessible. While specific addresses can change or be updated, it’s typically located in the embassy district. A quick search on Google Maps for “Embassy of the Philippines, Kuala Lumpur” will provide the most up-to-date address and operating hours.
Final Thoughts: A Traveler’s “Rice in Water”
Overall, while the process involved a bit more time and money than initially anticipated – particularly with the police clearance and the on-arrival extension – it wasn’t overly complicated. As any seasoned traveler knows, these minor hurdles are often just “rice in water” – a common, manageable part of the adventure! Despite the initial hiccups, the journey to the Philippines and the eventual extension made the WordCamp experience, and the exploration of this beautiful country, possible.
